SAF Yacht Club

SAF Yacht Club GOALS

SAF Yacht Club was founded on 3 June 1967 by a group of sailing enthusiasts which includes school teachers and SAF personnel. From their vision of having a club around which can facilitate the interests of like-minded people in Singapore, the SAF Yacht Club was born.

The club has its roots associated with HMS Laburnum, an old captured Japanese warship which was then a training platform for the Singapore Naval Volunteer Reserve. When the club moved from Telok Ayer Basin to Pulau Belakang Mati (now Sentosa), it acquired the name: SAF Boat Club. In 1969, when the club relocated to Seletar Air Base, the name was changed to the present: SAF Yacht Club (SAFYC). In 1977, after a brief sojourn on the premises of Changi Sailing Club, the club moved in to its present home in Sembawang Camp.

In February 1996, SAFYC, previously constituted under the General Orders of MINDEF, became a legal entity registered with the Registrar of Societies. The Club’s early sea going assets amounted to 5 GP14s, 3 Ospreys, 10 Fibrites, a 26 ft keeled sloop, a few Snipes and two Thunderbolts (locally designed 22-ft, 3-crew boat). Today, the club proudly owns a fleet of more than 270 crafts. These include Optimists, Bytes, Toppers, Lasers, Lasers IIs, Laser Pico, International 420s, 470s, Larks, Hobbie Cats and Nacras, kayaks, keel boats, jet skis and power boats.

In 1995, MINDEF approved the recommendation of RECORD II that SAFYC develop further facilities with two club houses for NS men and their families to recognize their contributions and efforts in Total Defence. The new Sembawang Clubhouse with new facilities and a much bigger fleet of sail crafts was officially opened on 10 January 1999 by Deputy Prime Minister & Minister for Defence, Dr Tony Tan Keng Yam. The new Changi Clubhouse was completed in 2004 and officially opened by the Minister for Defence, Mr Teo Chee Hean on 28 May 2005.

Like a relentless ship that dares the seven seas, the club has come a long way. Through the years the Club has resided in numerous humble dwellings, and it has grown from strength to strength. Now, as SAFYC sets sail for the next voyage, we can look forward to more fabulous activities, an ever-growing family spirit, and tradition par excellence for the seaward bound.
