Temasek Club

Description

Description

Temasek Club, a registered society established since 1982, is the SAF Officers’ Club for all active Officers (regulars & NSFs), Senior Military Experts, NS Key/R(NS) Appointment Holders and retired SAF Officers.  Its purpose is to promote greater cohesion and interaction among the Officers.  While SAFTI-MI remains as the professional and spiritual home of the SAF Officer Corps, Temasek Club is in effect the social home of the Officers.

Temasek Club  at Portsdown Road was formerly a home for British soldiers. It all began in 1860 in Ireland. A teenage girl by the name of Elise Sandes was deeply concerned with small drummer boys who led the British Army battalions. These boys were largely illiterate and it was Elise Sandes who persuaded her mother to open up a large drawing room so that these boys could come in for a cup of tea, cakes and singsongs. At 19, she received a gift of property from a retired officer to set up the first home for soldiers. Many ladies of high social standing joined Elise to build more soldiers homes spanning Ireland, England, India, South Africa, France, Hong Kong, Borneo and Singapore. This tradition caught on after Elise died in 1934.

The Singapore Home was opened in 1949 and continued to serve the British soldiers in the same tradition after the World War II. After nearly thirty years of Christian service, the Singapore Home was handed over to the Government in Dec 75 when the British withdrew her forces East of the Suez Canal.

From 1975 to 1982, the site was renamed Portsdown Clubhouse and was used by the Singapore Civil Service. In 1982, MINDEF established Temasek Club to promote social, cultural, educational and sporting activities among SAF officers and their families. Promoting greater cohesion and interaction among officers of the SAF, was another primary objective. “TEMASEK” was used for its national connotation to promote the Club’s prestige. The Clubhouse then, had very simple infrastructure with the swimming pool being the main attraction. The restaurant was not air-conditioned. Over the years, improvements were made to meet the needs of its members.

In 1993, the Club underwent a major redevelopment. On 18 Mar 94, the Club was inaugurated by the then Minister for Defense, Dr Yeo Ning Hong.
